BUSINESS leaders were today urged to attend the first Dorset business conference at the Portland Spa.

The free event, called the 2008 Conference for Dorset Businesses, is being held at the complex on September 11.

The Dorset Strategic Partnership is among the organisations funding the event. The Dorset Economic Partnership (DEP) is co-ordinating the conference.

DEP chairman Mary Boughton said: "We have a wealth of unusual and diverse businesses across the county, and events such as the 2012 Olympics present us with new and exciting commercial opportunities.

"We hope that through organising events such as this conference and bringing the local business community together in one place we can take a unanimous approach to maximising and developing trade and commerce in Dorset."

The aim of the conference is to draw businesses together to recognise successes and discuss issues affecting them.

The event will include presentations and workshops on improving the image and identity of Dorset and achieving Dorset's 2012 legacy. There will also be networking opportunities and exhibition stands representing business support organisations and training providers. David Walsh, who is economic development manager at Dorset County Council, said: "Dorset is a beautiful place to live and work but it is important not to be complacent and to do all we can to support local businesses whether it is by training the future workforce or hosting networking and information events.

"The Conference for Dorset Businesses is a step in the right direction and we hope that people will take advantage of this opportunity and find the time to attend." The conference is taking place between 9.30am and 4pm.
