AN ENGINEERING firm in Poole which works with Formula One teams is diversifying into aerospace and plans to recruit more staff.
Last year C&B Composite Solutions in Stanley Green Road, which specialises in carbon fibre, embarked on the rigorous AS9100 accreditation system for the aerospace industry, which it aims to complete this September.
Once achieved, managing director Steve Salmon believes there will be an influx of orders.
“When we gain accreditation we will have to recruit,” he said, adding that success would also mean new staff being trained as laminators.
Currently the bulk of business is generated by producing car parts such as wings and flaps for Formula One racing teams including Torro Rosso, the Italian Red Bull team.
It has worked with Aston Martin on an aerodynamic programme for its DB9 and AMV8 models and is currently carrying out a substantial amount of work for Formula Three.
C&B, which generated a six-figure turnover in 2008 delivering a profit, also has a strong presence on the water.
“We manufacture ballast control systems for powerboats,” said Mr Salmon.
These “pick up water from the back of the boat and push it to the front to stabilise” it, preventing capsizing in choppy waters.
This has caught the attention of UK rescue services, which use the systems.
Aside from this, the company, which does everything in-house including patterns, moulds and production, also works with powerboat manufacturers such as the American brand Nor-Tech.
Since the early 1990s it has supplied eight-times Class 1 World Powerboat Champion Steve Curtis, who runs Cougar Marine at Warsash, near Southampton, with throttle controls.
