Most people would leave their current job if another employer offered them more money.
That is the finding of a survey commissioned by Tate, the office recruiter, which asked 400 customers what their main reasons were for considering a new job.
A pay rise was key for 59 per cent of workers.
Managing director Jo Edwards said that recruitment agencies can help workers tackle “tricky conversations, such as negotiating salaries”.
“This, coupled with skills training and personal coaching that some agencies provide, makes achieving a higher salary or package more probable,” she said.
However, the agency said that average weekly earnings have remained unchanged since December 2009 and consequently salary increases during 2010 would be minimal.
The survey revealed that 11 per cent of workers wanted career progression while for nine per cent location was important and just half a per cent were concerned about benefit packages such as company cars and gym membership.
It said the threat of redundancy would continue to subside during 2010.
