Dorset's still got a sweet tooth, despite the hard times

By Tim Saunders »

People are still eating sweets, no matter how difficult the economic conditions.

That’s according to Carol and Michael Page, who opened Sweeties in Southbourne, two years ago.

The couple retired after running a hotel and golf club but quickly got bored.

“The business started making money on the first day it opened and recession has not affected it,” said Mrs Page.

“It didn’t cost us much to set up – we did the fitting out ourselves, including new floors and lighting.

“It appeals to the elderly, who like to be reminded of the sweets of their youth, as well as the young.

“We have 370 jars here with different sweets plus handmade fudge.”

Sweeties in Southbourne, next to The Grove Pub, is open from noon to 5pm on Mondays and 10am to 5.30pm Tuesday to Saturday.

The couple, who are considering opening on Sundays in the summer, “are actively looking for premises for another shop”.
