If planning permission for a new super market for Waitrose is granted in Wimborne it will change the Town forever there is not doubt about that – the question is in what way?
After years of debate and split opinions finally an application by Waitrose to build a super store on the Cricket green has been submitted. However the notice on the planning application states the
proposal “does not accord with the Local Town Plan”
Wimborne appears divided on this proposal and as a resident of Wimborne I am also concerned about changes and how the Town will develop for the future. Wimborne is a small market town and as such its
character is important. Of course change will happen but it is important that residents and businesses are listened to and that change is the right scale for all the community, the people and
businesses of Wimborne.
As I speak to residents I hear a clear picture that most want Waitrose but not on the cricket ground and many have said they would welcome Waitrose but on the current Somerfield store site.
As immediate past President of Dorset Business, the Dorset Chamber of Commerce, I am passionate about a “Fair Deal for Business” and what I call “Community Economics”. A
sustainable scale and way of doing business that represents the right balance between commercial and social interests at community and regional levels.
I remain to be convinced that the proposed scheme is good for everyone in Wimborne I do not think that adequate pedestrian links are included to the centre of town and I am also concerned that car
parking is a long way from the centre of Wimborne and what are the traffic consequences. In my view there is also a danger that customers will just turn up to Waitrose load their boots and drive
away.
However what is important is that everyone gets involved and has their say about this scheme. What I want to see is good planning for the whole community, but just doing nothing is not now an option,
everyone must make their opinions clear and perhaps we can all move forward for the benefit of Wimborne Town.
