A PORTLAND hotel and spa has scooped a certificate of excellence showing it is among the top 10 per cent of accommodation and facilities on international website TripAdvisor.

The Ocean Hotel and Spa held a traditional afternoon tea in celebration of its award.

Weymouth and Portland Mayor Ray Banham presented the certificate to management and staff at the Southwell Business Park hotel and spa.

To qualify for the Certificate of Excellence, businesses must maintain an overall rating of four or higher, out of a possible five, as reviewed by travellers on TripAdvisor Managing director Verna Herry said TripAdvisor reviewers praised the hotel and spa’s rooms and the Cliff Panoramic Restaurant.

She said: “We are delighted that TripAdvisor statistics for The Ocean Hotel and Spa show that 227 out of 267 reviews (85 per cent) were rated as ‘excellent’ or ‘very good’.

“It’s humbling to receive this award. I think it’s good for the industry and good for the area.

The certificate of excellence is displayed in the hotel’s bar.

Verna became managing director at the Ocean Hotel and Spa earlier this year.

She was previously chief executive officer of the Ocean Spa, which took over the next door hotel, previously known as the Venue Hotel, in February.

New facilities have been created at the hotel including a new sauna, steam rooms and hot tub facilities.

Verna said: “It’s so good when the public recognises what you do because they are the ones who are writing the reviews.

“People said they were most impressed with their rooms – housekeeping is doing a brilliant job and the restaurant is doing a brilliant job.

“Reception is doing great, treatment is doing fantastic.”

Verna said she is keen to work with other local tourism and wellbeing businesses to promote the area.

She said: “Chesil Beach was the first world heritage site in the UK, just like the Great Barrier Reef in Australia is promoted, we should promote this site more.
